Optimizing Field Operations through integrated Software selection
A rapidly growing vertically integrated company specializing in EV charging solutions (hardware, software, services) for commercial fleets, public agencies, and OEMs - including installation, preventive maintenance, and repair services for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations - faced a critical need to optimize its field operations. With a technician team expected to grow from under 50 to hundreds within two years, the company sought to implement a routing & scheduling software solution to improve route efficiency, reduce fleet costs, and support expansion.

THE STORY
The Challenge
The EV Charging Services Provider had limited internal experience and bandwidth to evaluate and select the right routing & scheduling solution. Their initial exploration included only one Vehicle Routing & Scheduling (VRS) vendor, and there was uncertainty about whether their needs were best met by a traditional VRS platform. They required a thorough needs assessment, vendor analysis, and expert guidance to ensure the selected solution would align with operational goals and future growth.
Our Apppoach
PS Solutions Group (PSSG) was engaged to lead the software selection process, leveraging deep field service and enterprise SaaS expertise. The project included:
- Conducting in-depth interviews and workshops to define business requirements and pain points.
- Identifying and shortlisting four relevant, top software vendors.
- Coordinating and facilitating discovery and demo calls with each vendor.
- Developing a standardized evaluation framework and cost-benefit analysis.
- Providing objective, data-driven recommendations and supporting contract negotiations.
Our Recommendations
Through the needs assessment, PSSG determined that the company’s operational challenges centered more on scheduling than on multi-stop route optimization. Approximately 90% of technician routes involved a single stop, making a Field Service Management (FSM) solution more suitable than traditional VRS platforms they were considering.
During the project, it became clear that the company was also considering a separate initiative to identify and implement an asset management solution. The evaluation process revealed that Field Service Management (FSM) platforms could address both Scheduling and Asset management needs within a single, integrated solution. As a result, the Asset Management project was consolidated into the Field Service Management (FSM) selection effort.

The Results
By shifting focus to a Field Service Management (FSM) solution, the company addressed both its scheduling and asset management needs within a single platform. This consolidation enabled the client to streamline implementation, reduce potential duplicative costs, and ensure a more efficient approach to supporting rapid technician growth and operational complexity.
The integrated solution provided a clear path forward for scalable field operations and asset oversight, positioning the company for continued expansion and improved service delivery.

- Clarity on Solution Needs: Shifted focus from VRS and Asset Management to FSM, ensuring better long-term alignment.
- Thorough Vendor Evaluation: Provided a structured, unbiased process for selecting the optimal software partner.
- Cost Avoidance: Reduced potential duplicative software licensing & implementation costs
